Fourmile Falls is a popular hike that follows an old stock trail into the Weminuche Wilderness. It starts off at an elevation of 9,209 feet and quickly becomes deceiving as you drop 200 feet over the course of just under a mile. Thoughts of how easy this is will cross your mind. But then you suddenly realize you have to climb this back up on the way out.
After passing through a beautiful open meadow with views of Eagle Peak, you begin the hike up of almost 1,000 feet. About two miles in as you crest over a small uphill section, you get a spectacular glimpse of both waterfalls in the distance.
There are three water crossings on the trail. All three have relatively easy access across as long as the creek isn’t raging!
At 3.2 miles in, you’ve reached the first waterfall that drops over 300 feet into Falls Creek. This is where most hikers stop to visit and possibly take a dip in the falls. You can continue up the very steep trail at this point to see the second water fall.
At this point, most return to the trailhead. But for the more adventurous, you can continue on to Fourmile lake or make it a loop with Anderson Trail. Both options require a couple thousand more feet of gain and up to 10 more miles of hiking.
